Exeter

Sitting at the top of the Exe Estuary, Devon's county capital is a mix of centuries old architecture and modern designed shopping areas.

It's most prominant building is the cathedral, finished in the 15th century, that rests at the top of the hill that contains the main city centre, imposing itself on the skyline whenever you look across the city.

Even before you enter the cathedral it's large green surroundings will give you ample time to stretch out and take in the sun before going into the classical building and exploring it's many architectural features.

For anyone feeling more adventurous you can also go deep underground into the underground passages that cover a huge area under the city. Guided tours, not for the claustrophobic, are regularly scheduled. There are also, if you're feeling historic, the ruins of the old city walls to explore, parts of which are still standing around the city.

Of course what Exeter also gives you is a large City Centre shopping area if you need to fullfill more commercial desires while in the city. From upmarket high street brands to small independant shops the Centre and its recently redeveloped Princesshay shopping area covers the lot.

With parks such as Northernhay Gardens alongside one of the main railway stations and a River walk that takes you along miles of beautiful scenery centering on the updated Quay area, the City can cater for even the calmest of days out.
